RECAMP donors confab convenes Monday in Paris
Paris, France, 09/23 - An international conference designed to mobilise contributions for the fifth cycle of the Reinforcement of African Peacekeeping Capacities (RECAMP) opens here Monday, organisers disclosed Thursday.
They said the Paris conference would help to enlighten delegates from governments, international organisations and NGOs on the main components of RECAMP 5, whose military phase is slated for November in Cameroon.
The Paris meeting, under the aegis of France, the European Union and African Union, will help to create a "real spirit of partnership and convergence of action" among the various parties involved in the strengthening of African peacekeeping efforts, organisers added.
They said financial, material and human resources contributed at the Paris conference to the 5th RECAMP cycle would be announced at the end of the gathering.
French officials, in a bid to train African armies in peacekeeping operations, launched the RECAMP initiative in 1999.
It was later adopted by the EU, which became one of the main contributors with 250 million euros designed to train "a rapid reaction African force".
The US recently announced its intention to train about 40,000 African soldiers in peacekeeping operations.
