BDF to host peace-keeping exercise next month
26 May, 2005
GABORONE - Botswana Defence Force (BDF) will next month host a brigade-size multinational peace-keeping operation, code named Exercise Thokgamo.
Co-organised by Botswana and France, Exercise Thokgamo is to be held under the French sponsored Re-enforcement of African Capabilities in Peacekeeping programme (RECAMP).
It is a continuation of exercises conducted under the RECAMP programme in Southern Africa - Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique from 2002 to 2004.
The exercise will be organised in Maun and surrounding areas from June10 to 25. The aim of the exercise is to train SADC member states in the conduct of multi-national peacekeeping operations (PKO) under a UN, AU or SADC mandate.
All SADC member states have been invited to participate in the exercise and almost all of them have confirmed their participation.
The invitation has also been extended to other countries outside Africa, as well as international organisations (IOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and governmental organisations (GOs).
The exercise will serve to demonstrate the capability of SADC countries to commit a brigade-size force in order to develop regional co-operation in the field of peace-keeping in line with the AU and SADC standby brigade force.
It is also meant to enhance friendly relations among countries and armed forces of the region.
The BDF has accepted to host the exercise, as it will provide, among other things, field training experience to BDF soldiers, command and staff training for commanders and staff officers and field training and planning on logistics sustainability in military operations and civil/military co-operation.
