TROOPS from member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will descend on Maun next month at the start of a one and a half weeks brigade size multinational peace keeping exercise led by Botswana and France.

The exercise code named Exercise Thokgamo, will be held in Maun and surrounding areas from June 10 to 25 under the French sponsored Re-enforcement of African Capabilities in Peace Keeping Programme (RECAMP).

The objective of the exercise is to train SADC member states in the conduct of multinational peace keeping operations under a United Nations, African Union and SADC mandate as well as enhance friendly relations between the armed forces of the region.

A press statement released by the BDF headquarters in Gaborone said Exercise Thokgamo will serve to demonstrate the capability of SADC countries to commit a brigade size force in order to develop regional cooperation in the field of peace keeping in line with the AU and SADC Standby Brigade Force.

Brigadier Modiko of the BDF said Botswana accepted to host the exercise because of the benefits that come with hosting an event of that magnitude.

Some of the intended benefits are field training experience, command and staff training for commanders, planning on logistics sustenance in military operations and civil/military cooperation.

By Monday this week the BDF said the majority of SADC member countries had confirmed their participation.
