AFRICAN UNION AND FRANCE LAUNCH NEW JOINT MILITARY
EXERCISE
Received Friday, 17 June 2005 12:11:00 GMT
LAGOS, June 17 (AFP) - The African Union and France will plan a new joint military exercise for more than a dozen armies during a meeting on Tuesday, the continental organisation's seat, French officials announced Friday.
France's role in the exercise, Recamp 5, is based on the country's double partnership with the African Union and the European Union, according to a statement sent to AFP from the French Defence Ministry.
Recamp 5's objective was to "respond to the new system of the defence and security policies of the AU and African regions".
The last such joint exercise, whose French acronym stands for strengthening Africa's peacekeeping capacities, ended in the small west African country of Benin late last year.
"The authorities of the AU's Commission, EU representatives, members of the AU and regional organisations, as well as AU-accredited ambassadors and a French delegation will take part in this meeting" next week, the statement added.
Twelve African countries, 13 contributor countries and eight observer countries took part in the previous exercise, Recamp 4.
